We are leading a team of several law firms and organizations in Texas federal court to ensure that the people incarcerated in Texas prisons are housed in safe temperatures. WTO Partner and Pro Bono Committee Chair Kevin Homiak discussed the case with NPR on “All Things Considered.” On March 26, 2025, the court found the unairconditioned Texas prisons’ extreme heat is “plainly unconstitutional” under the Eighth Amendment.

We represent 4,000 Louisiana foster children in a class action against the Louisiana child welfare system. The suit alleges that Louisiana’s child welfare system, which the head of the state agency described as in a "death spiral" and "hemorrhaging employees," is failing its most vulnerable children and requires systemic reform.

Louisiana’s child welfare system has overwhelming caseloads, high instability for home placements, limited access to medical care, and child death rates

50% higher than the national average.

We partner with organizations nationwide that help underserved populations in dire need of legal services.

Colorado

Impact

Our lawyers feel a sense of duty to donate our legal services to the communities where we live and work. Recent highlights of our Colorado pro bono involvement:

  • We, along with several other law firms, are part of a Denver area pro bono initiative. B:CIVIC—an affiliate of the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation—featured the collaboration, which included a series of events for National Pro Bono Week in 2024 that raised awareness of pro bono opportunities for Colorado lawyers.

  • Together with the ACLU of Colorado, we represent public school students and other plaintiffs who are suing the Elizabeth School District over a book ban that violates free speech protections. We won a preliminary injunction on March 19, 2025.
